One of our favorite things about Fall is taking our classic staples and reinventing them. A must have staple that is getting a bit of an upgrade in our eyes these days is our classic denim jacket. We’ve taken our everyday jacket and paired it with a fall-toned plaid shirt, skinny chino, silk knit tie & a kick-ass tassel loafer. The key to making this look cohesive is keeping things in the family when it comes to color stories. Since the jacket we have is a deep, raw denim we’re opting to keep the plaid & tie in the blue family. South of the belt, you can never go wrong with a classic khaki & tassel loafer. Bonus style tip: This look can be worn perfectly under your favorite fall topcoat when the temps drop a bit.

How to design a perfectly cool coffee table

final table

One of the best parts about Fall is making small tweaks to our space. We pack away the seersucker and floral prints, the birkenstocks and boat shoes get tucked under the bed, and we find some time to make simple & easy adjustments to the rest of our pad. One of the easiest ways to give your crib a fresh fall look is to update your coffee table set-up. Follow these simple steps and you’re on your way to a cool, ‘we didn’t try too hard’ look for your living room…

STEP 1: Select a substantial base

step1

This Ralph Lauren coffee table book is kind of the end-all-be-all of coffee table books. Not only is it packed with legendary pics from the classic designer, but the size, color and weight of this bad boy make a perfect base for your coffee table set-up. We also love how the spine of the book spells out good old RL’s name in a classic, bold font.

-Center the book on the table with the spine facing out (you want people to see this sucker)

STEP 2: Build up

step2

When you select book #2, make sure the size is slightly smaller and that the colors work well with your base. We’re keeping the fashion & style vibe going by opting for a classic Vogue book, jam packed with classic editorials. Feel free to go nuts here.

-Again, center the book with the spine facing out.

STEP 3: Pick a final book (with a cover you want people to see)

step3

Being that we are obsessed with a good mens slipper, we selected “The Gentleman’s Slipper” as our top book. Not only is it packed with killer content, but the cover is bold, colorful & pretty fucking cool.

STEP 3: A Succulent & small trays (or coasters)

step5

You can never go wrong with a small, cool succulent. Place your choice botanical right next to a small stack of coasters or small ceramic trays. These will come in handy when your gang comes over for drinks on Saturday night.

STEP 4: Set this sh*t on fire (we’re talking candles, matches & a cool match holder)

step9

Le Labo makes just about the best smelling candles you can find. Grab a fresh scent (we always opt for Santal 26) and pair it with a brass-toned match holder for your match collection…this will give your overall design a hint of Mad Men coolness.

Although it may be officially fall, that doesn’t mean its time to ease up on your fitness routine. In fact, consider this your season to upgrade your gym commute look…think hollywood bad-ass. Our trick? Think of three easy steps.

1) SWAP OUT THE SWEATS:  Throw a quilted pair of joggers over your workout shorts for a slimmer, more current athletic look.

2) HELLO MOTO:  Add a sick leather jacket to your grey tee or athletic shirt to knock it out of the park.

3) UP THE DUFFEL: A quality duffel is a sound investment and will take you from your workout, to the airport, to a weekend out of the city. (we have a lower and higher priced version below in the shop the post feature)

One of our MUST HAVE pieces in the closet overtime Fall comes around is a classic crewneck sweatshirt. Try pairing it underneath your Mon-Fri suit for a look that’s weekend warrior ready. Don’t forget to add some color south of the ankle and opt for a cool, jewel toned athletic sneaker.

Give your suit a reboot by pairing it with a western denim shirt and lace-up wingtip boot for a vibe that much more East London art scene than Upper East Side banker vibes.

Some hair & grooming stuff we’re real...

HAIR-HEADER

With New York Fashion week in full swing we’re already finding ourselves bouncing around Manhattan from event to event while trying to beat this INSANE September heat. The last thing we want to worry about is sweaty, flat hair.

We’ve pulled together some of the hair & grooming products that are working to keep the hair game on point these days (yeah, some of them look really girly, but these products are no joke for the a good high & tight man cut).

2215478STEP 1. Big Sexy Hair Powder Play: Use this bad boy first. Once your hair is dry, lightly sprinkle throughout your hair. This crazy hair crack basically dirties up your hair and serves as an initial layer to keep things from falling flat (especially in these hot temps). Warning: use too much of this stuff and you won’t be able to run your fingers through your hair.

Mens-Firm-Hold-Matte-Finish-Clay-PomadeSTEP 2. Baxter of California Clay Pomade: A tried and true favorite. This shit is heavy and has mega hold without any shine. We use a tiny bit of this as our second step to give the hair a cool, lifted shape. (a tiny bit, less than a dime sized amount will do). Rub the gunk around your hands and then run your fingers through your hair.

a149111.001STEP 3: Jonathan Silky Dirt: This is the shit that gives the shine. Don’t expect much hold out of this creamy obsession, but it will make your hair look like you just stepped out of an editorial. Use a dime sized amount.

1248STEP 4: R+CO Hairspray: Just put your ego aside and forget about the bright red hooker nails on the bottle…this stuff is awesome. (one of our good friends who is a celebrity hairstylist in LA turned us on to this underground brand) Flexible yet strong hold that won’t have you smelling like an overly perfumed tourist while walking down the sidewalk. Just a quick spray will do.

nd.17STEP 5: A quick spritz of your favorite cologne and you’re out the door. (we’ve recently rediscovered one of our old school favorites, Terre de Hermes and remembered why we loved it so much)

How to slowly transition into leather weather

September 1st very well might be our most favorite day in New York City. It is a beacon of hope; a sign of days to come. Days free of sweaty backs & subway cars, days free of the oh-so-pungeant smell of garbage on the sidewalks, and finally…days made just for leather. As mornings and evenings are already starting to cool down a bit, were layering one of our lighter moto jackets over long length tees to get the overall look without compromising our sanity and body temp (save the heavy layering for temps in the 50s/60s). We’ve rounded up some of our favorite leather and faux leather jackets for you here, and most of them are under $200. You’re welcome.
