The Cuban Collar: Your Summer Go-To

Oozing old school pizazz and charm, the Cuban collar is bringing us right back to the 50’s. Consider this Summer staple your go-to alternative to a traditional broadcloth or oxford cloth button down shirt. The cut is slightly boxier yet familiar, keeping you standing out from the crowd while not looking overly trendy. To make sure you’re actually getting a Cuban collar shirt, make sure to keep your eyes out for an open collar with a hint of a notch. The fit is slightly roomier than a standard summer shirt and the sleeves will always be short (think crazy bowling shirt from your favorite retro film). Because this baby is cut more generously (aka no skin tight, sweaty Summer situations happening) we suggest pairing it back to a slim, lightweight chino and a throwback slipper or espadrille.

New Best Friend: The Popover Shirt

the best popover shirt

One of our go-to looks for Spring/Summer is the monochromatic look. We love navy on navy. However, when pulling off this look you’ll want to make sure to play with textures and fabrics to keep the look elevated and interesting (trust us, a navy t-shirt with navy cotton shorts is nothing impressive). We love this Japanese selvedge popover shirt from Frank & Oak paired back to a slim navy 5-pocket pant from the same collection. The dark, rich texture of the popover shirt adds just enough interest and depth to the top and is comfortable to boot. The pants are slightly lighter as to keep the overall outfit from looking like a jumpsuit. Stick to neutral accessories and shoes for the win.

We’re big fans of uniform dressing in the Summer months. We find something that works and we hit it over, and over, and over again. Right now it’s all about a kick-ass short sleeved striped shirt. We love these paired back to a trusty pair of jeans and an updated boat shoe. When the real heat rolls around mid July, shirts like this will be perfect with a tailored pair of shorts and a handsome sandal. For now, consider a short sleeved striped shirt a best friend for layering while the Spring chill burns away.

Grooming Update: May 2016

We’ll admit it, we have a bit of a problem when it comes to grooming products. We can’t get enough (let’s say it comes with the territory).Call us hoarders, it’s cool. Each month we try to update the drawer and try out products that we’ve never used before which leads us to our latest haul of grooming goodies. Our picks for may range from a killer fake tan to a miracle volumizing spray for your combover. Checkout the latest must-haves, after the jump:

1: LAYRITE GROOMING SPRAY: Use it for a dry style that wonʼt leave your hair feeling overly stiff or crispy. Layrite Grooming Spray is a light grooming spray, used in the barber shops to create a bit volume and prep the hair during the drying process for a good dose of our famous pomade. Take one home and use it – youʼll look and feel better.

2. 24K SALLY HERSHBERGER TEXTURIZING PASTE: This velvety paste is perfect for a laid-back weekend look or for something a bit more casual. Don’t expect a slick, shiny do with this product…this is for a relaxed, off-duty style. It doesn’t offer much hold but the finish is killer. We absolutely love the smell and texture.

3. MITCH CONSTRUCTION PASTE: Flexible, webby texture forms and separates—great for messy, undone styles. Long-lasting styling fixatives secure the style, while conditioning ingredients leave hair soft and manageable. Crunch-free finish with no flaking.

4.BONDI SANDS SELF-TANNING FOAM: This shit is amazing. Straight from down under, this is one of the best products we’ve tried. It is applied with a mitt (we suggest the mitt, don’t use your hands) and glides on smoothly and evenly. The smell is awesome (a bit like coconut, vanilla and a hint of chocolate even?) and it dries in seconds. As with all self-tanners, be sure to read the full instructions to avoid a self-tanning disaster.

5. MITCH DOUBLE HITTER SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER: This guy lathers like a champ. An awesome daily shampoo with a built-in conditioner, this has quickly become one of our favorite shampoos. The smell is fresh and not overly scented and the packaging is cool and easy. We seriously can’t rave enough about the lather, though. It’s genius.

You Need Now: The Printed Shirt

Printed Shirt Spring 2016 Men

This Spring, designers looked to crazy prints and patterns to update menswear staples like mens polos, short sleeve shirts, and bomber jackets. Per usual, the trend has made its way down to the high street and we’ve rounded up some of the best printed shirts that will give you a bang for your buck. Ranging from oversized florals to palm trees, to micro-prints…a little pattern in your shirt will instantly update your Spring/Summer look. To keep things classic, we say pair it back to something classic and simple like a slim chino, white jean, or ankle-length suit pant. As for footwear – we suggest pairing it back to a clean white sneaker, a simple sandal, or a chic espadrille.

The smoothie that packs a punch

By Preston Konrad

Last year I found myself in Austin, Texas to style an advertising print campaign and I fell in love with just about everything. The food, the vintage shopping, the people, and especially a green smoothie from a little hidden gem of a juice truck. Packed with fruits, veggies AND protein, this bad boy was my go-to healthy snack while on the road (lord knows I needed something healthy after all of the damn good BBQ I was inhaling). When my shoot wrapped, Although I was happy to get back to Manhattan, I was strangely sad to leave my favorite juice joint. I was determined to recreate it upon my return.

(pictured above, Juice Austin)

One of the best things about living in New York is that us New Yorkers can get just about anything we need, at any time of day within a few blocks of our apartment. There’s a killer deli (we call them bodegas) on my street. Stocked with the usual finds including everything from paninis and Parliament lights to Palmolive and prunes, this deli in particular happened to recreate my smoothie almost exactly. (I know, thank god lol).  I recently snapchatted my smoothie obsession and was flooded with questions about what was in it…and if it actually tastes good. The answer is HELL YES. Although it looks like liquified lettuce, it tastes exactly like a Creamsicle (remember those?) and is packed with protein to keep hunger at bay. I love grabbing one of these after a SoulCycle class or in the middle of a warm day to keep me full until dinner. I’ve scrounged up the recipe for you guys so you can whip this up for yourself, after the jump:

1 cup freshly washed spinach leaves (make sure to really pack them in the cup)

1 cup freshly washed kale

1 cup fresh or frozen mango cubes

1 scoop vanilla protein powder (you’ll want to aim to get around 20-25g of protein to cut the sugars from the fruit)

½ of a banana (I like to use half to cut some of the sugar but feel free to use the whole thing)

¾ cup coconut almond milk (you’ll want the almond combo to get the nutty aftertaste)

1 splash of orange juice (reduced sugar or reduced calorie)

½ cup – 1 cup ice (to your liking)

Spring Home Updates

Screen Shot 2016-05-03 at 9.08.46 PMWith Spring weather comes Spring cleaning. With Spring cleaning comes the moment when you realize you’ve thrown out cheesy old plaid throw pillows, or when you realize the “art” you have hanging in your hallway is pretty lame, or when you realize you have no throw pillows at all. We know you’ve been updating your wardrobe for Spring, and now it’s time to focus on updating your pad. We’ve pulled together 3 trends for the crib as well as some affordable and easy picks from each. Enjoy and make sure to tag Preston on Instagram to show the stylish life updates you make to your place.

Rose gold has become one of the hottest metals to welcome into your home. Adding a pop of this bad-ass metal into your place will instantly add a cool, minimalist feel to your space. Try combining your rose gold object with some crisp, clean marble for an ultra curated look. Be sure not to overdo it here…a little bit goes a long way.

Consider the succulent to be the new Edison bulb. A few years back, these babies were only found in the coolest shops and lofts in Brooklyn, San Fran & LA and now (especially here in NYC) you can get your hand on one from just about anywhere. That being said, we’re totally down with this trend and love what adding a succulent does to our desk game. The best part? Little to no maintenance required. Boom.

We touched on this while chatting about rose gold, but marble and marble colored goods are a home trend we’re really digging. Small hits of crisp marble and marble colored accessories add a fresh, clean layer to your pad for Spring.
