Grooming Update: May 2016

We’ll admit it, we have a bit of a problem when it comes to grooming products. We can’t get enough (let’s say it comes with the territory).Call us hoarders, it’s cool. Each month we try to update the drawer and try out products that we’ve never used before which leads us to our latest haul of grooming goodies. Our picks for may range from a killer fake tan to a miracle volumizing spray for your combover. Checkout the latest must-haves, after the jump:

1: LAYRITE GROOMING SPRAY: Use it for a dry style that wonʼt leave your hair feeling overly stiff or crispy. Layrite Grooming Spray is a light grooming spray, used in the barber shops to create a bit volume and prep the hair during the drying process for a good dose of our famous pomade. Take one home and use it – youʼll look and feel better.

2. 24K SALLY HERSHBERGER TEXTURIZING PASTE: This velvety paste is perfect for a laid-back weekend look or for something a bit more casual. Don’t expect a slick, shiny do with this product…this is for a relaxed, off-duty style. It doesn’t offer much hold but the finish is killer. We absolutely love the smell and texture.

3. MITCH CONSTRUCTION PASTE: Flexible, webby texture forms and separates—great for messy, undone styles. Long-lasting styling fixatives secure the style, while conditioning ingredients leave hair soft and manageable. Crunch-free finish with no flaking.

4.BONDI SANDS SELF-TANNING FOAM: This shit is amazing. Straight from down under, this is one of the best products we’ve tried. It is applied with a mitt (we suggest the mitt, don’t use your hands) and glides on smoothly and evenly. The smell is awesome (a bit like coconut, vanilla and a hint of chocolate even?) and it dries in seconds. As with all self-tanners, be sure to read the full instructions to avoid a self-tanning disaster.

5. MITCH DOUBLE HITTER SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER: This guy lathers like a champ. An awesome daily shampoo with a built-in conditioner, this has quickly become one of our favorite shampoos. The smell is fresh and not overly scented and the packaging is cool and easy. We seriously can’t rave enough about the lather, though. It’s genius.

Some hair & grooming stuff we’re real...

With New York Fashion week in full swing we’re already finding ourselves bouncing around Manhattan from event to event while trying to beat this INSANE September heat. The last thing we want to worry about is sweaty, flat hair.

We’ve pulled together some of the hair & grooming products that are working to keep the hair game on point these days (yeah, some of them look really girly, but these products are no joke for the a good high & tight man cut).

2215478STEP 1. Big Sexy Hair Powder Play: Use this bad boy first. Once your hair is dry, lightly sprinkle throughout your hair. This crazy hair crack basically dirties up your hair and serves as an initial layer to keep things from falling flat (especially in these hot temps). Warning: use too much of this stuff and you won’t be able to run your fingers through your hair.

Mens-Firm-Hold-Matte-Finish-Clay-PomadeSTEP 2. Baxter of California Clay Pomade: A tried and true favorite. This shit is heavy and has mega hold without any shine. We use a tiny bit of this as our second step to give the hair a cool, lifted shape. (a tiny bit, less than a dime sized amount will do). Rub the gunk around your hands and then run your fingers through your hair.

a149111.001STEP 3: Jonathan Silky Dirt: This is the shit that gives the shine. Don’t expect much hold out of this creamy obsession, but it will make your hair look like you just stepped out of an editorial. Use a dime sized amount.

1248STEP 4: R+CO Hairspray: Just put your ego aside and forget about the bright red hooker nails on the bottle…this stuff is awesome. (one of our good friends who is a celebrity hairstylist in LA turned us on to this underground brand) Flexible yet strong hold that won’t have you smelling like an overly perfumed tourist while walking down the sidewalk. Just a quick spray will do.

nd.17STEP 5: A quick spritz of your favorite cologne and you’re out the door. (we’ve recently rediscovered one of our old school favorites, Terre de Hermes and remembered why we loved it so much)

Facial hair on fleek

RAZORImage courtesy of Remington

We have to admit, as much as we love maintaining our 5 o’clock shadow, we love a fresh & close cut shave every now and then (especially to for summer…beard tan lines = no bueno) and even when sporting a solid scruffy look, its all about keeping the neck perfectly clean via razor cuts. Well, we’ve gotten our hands on a new toy and we can’t quite put it down. Meet the Remington XF8700, the latest in foil shaving gear that delivers the closest one-pass shave (no, really…it does)

What do we love so much about this guy? There’s no sacrificing comfort for closeness with the XF8700…aka it works with gel, foam, in the shower, out of the shower or as a traditional dry razor. Aside from the close shave, insane versatility and supercharged power, say goodbye to wondering when the hell your razor is going to run out of juice while at the gym or on the road. A digital display at the bottom of this little baby tells you exactly what percentage of charge you have left (its kind of genius).  Click here for more info on Remington razors or below to grab your own…trust us, you won’t regret it.

Ice , Ice Baby: The Platinum Plunge

First of all, NO…I did NOT look to Kim Kardashian or Jared Leto for inspiration for this recent hair plunge. Maybe it was the long winter, the need for sun or just the itch for change, but over the weekend I decided to take a big jump and change things up north of the eyebrows. Yes, I just went platinum blonde and YES, I F*&ing love it.

Screen Shot 2015-03-29 at 10.01.01 PM

Having never colored my hair in my entire life (aside from that one time my head had an unfortunate collision with a drug store die box) It was important for me to choose the perfect colorist for this endeavor. Enter Mark Debolt, colorist to the stars at Marie Robinson Salon in New York City.

Screen Shot 2015-03-29 at 10.34.05 PM

The color team at Marie Robinson came highly recommended from a dear friend who certainly knows her platinum, the famously iced-platinum Editor-In-Chief of Cosmopolitan Magazine, Joanna Coles (who told me, “what’s the worst that can happen, someone will mistake you for Tilda Swinton??’). Her recommendation per usual, was on point. On Saturday morning I woke up as if it were Christmas morning, ran to starbucks, and headed downtown. The salon was packed…buzzing with perfectly colored New Yorkers; I knew I was in good hands with Mark. A double process and, a toner  and 4 hours later,  voila. Take a peek at my hair adventure right here:

As much as I am obsessed with the color, it’s going to take a bit of getting used to. (and I can’t stop reenacting the SNL Californian sketches) Something to help the ease into the look? A simple wardrobe to of luxe solids and basics.

Keep calm and moisturize, moisturize, moisturize...

It’s that time of year when the world falls in love…with hydrating skin products. The winter months are fast approaching; and with them, chapped faces, dry skin and a mess of other ailments that will have you racing to the dermatologist for expensive creams and lotions.

Get out of the pharmacy skin-care isle & have no fear…we’ve decided to share our secret skin savers that help us fight the winter chill and keep our faces fresh. From toners to creams, we have all your cold-weather skin essentials right here. Our must-haves, after the jump:

Movember, Mo Beard Maintenance
As we dive further into the cold autumn season, we encounter another month-long celebration of cancer awareness – Movember.  Starting in Australia in 2003, this initiative is meant to grow consciousness (and hair) of men’s health.

Although we can’t wait to put the razor down for a whole month, we have decided that we can’t let our lip foliage run rampant. So with manes that are bound to be wiry and difficult, we mustache ourselves one question (yeah, we went there): What products will help keep your crumb catchers looking, smelling and feeling great?

To answer this question, we rounded up some of the best brands we could find to keep your partner – and the general public – happy. Top picks, after the jump:

1) Beard oils are essential to every man with fuzzy features. Exposure to daily elements can strip away a beard’s bristles of the protective cuticle. This serum from Brooklyn Grooming ($29) not only gives your whiskers everyday protection, it also moisturizes the skin underneath.

2) Balms work the same way a pomade would for the strands on the top of your head. The Backwoods Beard Balm ($23) will hold that mustache in place (please, no curly handlebars) and instantly make your hair appear thicker.

3) We probably don’t recommend washing your new-found facial hair with a regular shampoo, but luckily for you this Billy Jealousy Beard Wash ($22) will do just the trick. The plant-based ingredients will keep your bristles feeling cleansed and refreshed all day long.

4) Zeus isn’t just the ruler of the Olympian gods, it is also the brand behind the perfect Pear Wood Boar Bristle Brush ($20) to help work out those stubborn tangles and flyways.

5) “Cologne? For your beard?! Now that’s just crazy.” Trust us, it’s a real thing and you’ll love it. Instead of smelling like today’s lunch menu, you’ll be filled with a woodsy, citrus scent with Jao Brand’s BeardScent ($28).
