Winter Staples: The Sperry Duck Book

Prepping For A Wintry Mix With Prep Staples

The Duck Boots I’m Loving

With the Holidays behind us, it’s time to get back to our regularly scheduled Winter programming. As much as I love my red plaids, tartans, and buffalo check prints; I like to keep things Wintery but not too Christmas heavy when styling my wardrobe after New Years. In general, my Winter style is all about taking prep classics and adding a little twist to them. Classic houndstooth prints mixed with rugged Native-American prints, slim denim with the cuffs rolled, a classic beanie, and of course – a classic Duck boot and chunky pair of socks. These bad boys from Sperry are my new go-to’s. Trust me, being an East coast kid with preppy roots, I’ve literally owned every pair of Duck boots out there – and I have to say these by far the most comfortable. Gone are the days of clunking around in boots that feel like cinderblocks, no more socks slipping down past my heels, etc…you know the struggles of an old-school Duck Boot. These babies from Sperry not only eliminate all of those pesky boot problem of years gone by, but they are waterproof with a great tread to keep me ready for city slipperiness all day long. Consider these your new south-of-the-ankle Winter staple when looking for a great boot that will give you endless styling opportunities and tons of comfort – finally, prep for all!

Fall is all about a fresh, new start. The Summer clothes have been tucked away and some killer new threads are in the closet. It’s time to turn up your Fall style and make a first impression, all over again. To turn up our style, we looked to some classic pieces from a classic brand. We swung by Banana Republic and were blown away by the current product. Modernized and re-imagined yet classic and timeless, we found ourselves in the fitting room with an armful of Fall product. By the end of the day, we had stocked up on elevated everyday essentials like slim pleated pants, classic turtleneck sweaters and heritage slim blazers. We’re all about keeping the color palette neutral and classic, opting for shades of grey and camel (one of our favorite combinations) and the fit slim. Ground the look with a rich leather loafer and belt for a vintage inspired vibe.

If we’re going to have to deal with these crisp (OK, downright cold) days of early Spring, we want to have the right layers. We love the new slim Spring flannels from the Nordstrom mens shop, especially this grey and cream situation (pictured above on Preston).  Paired back to classic slim Levis, a grey chukka boot and a city backpack (packed with umbrella and extra layers, obviously) you’re set for whatever this whack weather may bring you…or for a kick-ass brunch.

Early Spring temps rank right up there with the crisp days of Fall for us, yet with the insane weather of late…we have no choice but to get creative with spring layers. Instead of opting for a full spring jacket, we’re big fans of layering with staples like denim jackets, cardigans, and poppy spring shirting. If you’re going to be playful with the shirt and tie combo like Preston did here, be sure to keep the rest of the outfit clean and classic (think chinos, navy blue, converse, etc).

Early Spring in Manhattan is always INSANELY unpredictable. 60 degrees on Monday and by Friday, we’re being bullied by snow. The key to staying warm and dry while still looking seasonally appropriate for Spring, is all in the color story and layers. We opt for nautical tones of navy and cream in Spring fabrics like cotton and brushed light flannels. (SKIP the wool, snowflake prints, rustic plaids, etc…these should already be packed up in your closet for next Winter.)
