Grooming Products I Love For Spring 2017

My Spring Grooming Ride Or Dies

Anyone who knows me, knows I have a bit of a problem when it comes to buying, testing & hoarding grooming products. I. just. can. not. stop. From hair to tan to skin to face, I’m not joking when I say I have drawers full of products. Whether they are from a department store or a drug store, I get an odd amount of pleasure out of testing new grooming products. Now that  the chill of winter behind us and warm sunny days lie ahead, I’ve been switching up the grooming game to prep my skin hair & face for the Summer sun.

Many of us don’t realize that the winter months take it’s toll on our appearance. The crisp winds & cold days suck the moisture right out of our skin and the lack of sun has everyone looking way too pale.

What to do? Switch up the grooming game. For Spring 2017, I’ve been testing tons of new grooming products and have rounded up my top picks for you guys here, please enjoy and be sure to write me with any questions!

FAVORITE GRADUAL TANNER: Bondi Sands Gradual Tanning Milk  $22.00- Straight out of Australia (and suuuuper hard to find in the US), this is one of the most natural looking gradual tanners that I have found. Apply it after showering like you would you favorite everyday body moisturizer and boom, you’re out the door. The color of the product is white and applies smoothly and evenly…no streaks to be seen. The scent is an amazing, light coco butter scent and will not interfere with your cologne or eau de parfum.

FAVORITE DEODORANT: Dove Men+Care Elements Minerals & Sage $7.80 – I got hooked on spray deodorants after years of buying them in Europe while traveling for work (and wondering why there were not more spray options back home in the US). Say goodbye to white marks and streaks on your dark clothes, and easily toss it in your gym bag without the worry of it melting, breaking or chunking. This particular scent is new to the Dove men spray deodorant family, and I love it!

FAVORITE DAILY MOISTURIZER: Nutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel $14.21 – This stuff is crack. Seriously, it’s awesome. The perfect moisturizer to use as the weather warms up, this is more of a cooling gel moisturizer rather than a traditional, heavy cream. The scent is fresh and super light (almost smells like what you would want water to smell like?) and soaks into the skin almost immediately after application. What I love most about the insanely amazing texture is that it does not rest on top of your face or feel greasy in the slightest…keeping you from looking oily or shiny.

BEST HAIR CLAY: Kiehl’s Grooming Solutions Texturizing Clay $18.00 – This has become my go-to hair product for a few months now. Just released as part of the new ‘Grooming Solutions’ range, a tiny bit of this clay will leave your hair texturized and piecey with an awesome matte finish (little to no shine). I love that the grip is long lasting and yet easily washes out with water.

BEST NIGHTLY SERUM: Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Firming Serum $69.00 – Serum is the step that most guys forget about when going about their nightly routine. Applied after you wash your face and before your nightly moisturizer, this serum in particular will give you a toned and refreshed look by morning. Just a few drops will improve the look of your skin and make it appear more luminous and fresh.

BEST EYE CREAM: Mario Badescu Ceremide Eye Gel $18.00 – Another forgotten step in many people’s nightly routine, eye cream is crucial to fighting away those crows feet and fine lines. This bad boy from cult fav Mario Badescu is a must have. Much like the Nutrogena moisturizer, this is actually a refreshing gel as opposed to a cream…which feels much lighter while still packing a punch. I actually keep this in the fridge and then apply around my eyes at night or in the morning before a shoot or meeting to combat puffiness or dark circles.

Heyday: Fitness For Your Face

Heyday Facials: The Lunchtime Workout For Your Face

by Jacob Bengal

If you are anything like me, facials were usually a splurge that was reserved for when I really wanted to treat myself to a day of pampered luxury, or someone else loved me enough to get me a gift card for one. I’m obsessed with skin care and learning just about everything I can about how to achieve perfect, dewy, glowing skin on the regular. So when I heard about a skin-care haven in New York that was revolutionizing the facial game, I had to check it out for myself before I became obsessed.

HeyDay, a facial company based in New York City, is here to answer all of our prayers, questions, and concerns while streamlining the facial process and making it easy to permanently add into our busy schedules (because doesn’t everyone deserve at least 50-minutes to themselves once a month?).

Co-founder and CEO Adam Ross wants to help educate you and I to create the skin of our dreams. He took the splurge-y, luxury connotation of a facial and kicked it to the curb, offering targeted treatments, lowered pricing, easy scheduling including an app, and stores that stay open longer to “respect the New Yorker’s schedule.”

Ross had the lightbulb moment while working in the beauty industry thinking, “there is not enough accessibility to professional skincare in this structurally challenged market.” He realized getting a facial and caring about your skin’s health should be as easy as booking your daily SoulCycle class. With a society that is so focused on health, wellness, and self-care, it should be a no brainer that we should be treating our skin with the same intense respect we give our bodies and life choices.

HeyDay offers three different facial experiences to choose from: a 30-minute express facial for $60, the classic 50-minute facial for $95, and the extended extra “me time” 75-minute facial for $135. You can also choose from “add-ons” that include peels, microdermabrasion, or light therapy for $35. There are currently three different locations, with their newest urban oasis opening on the Upper East Side. All locations are open from 8am-10pm on the weekdays and 9am-8pm on the weekends. Whatever you are doing in the city, they can certainly squeeze you in while running from a workout, meeting, or a lunch date.

To create an unforgettable experience each Skin therapist works with you to perfect your daily routine and help make sure that when you leave, the importance of skincare stays with you. During my experience (I was so excited, I took a picture of my routine line-up) my skin therapist went through some changes I should make to help clear up my acne. I left with the brightest, and visibly less red and irritated complexion I had ever seen, plus a plethora of products to help make sure I could keep it that way (or at least until I plan to visit again next month). A few minutes later I even received an email with a detailed list of all the products that were used during my facial, in case I wanted to purchase them at a later date.

Ross recommends that you receive a facial every month, since skin cells renew every 28 days or so. It is beneficial to get a deep clean to remove dead skin cells, extract the pesky spots, and hydrate and brighten your skin on a whole new level. He also stressed the long-term benefits of skincare health, and that the earlier you act to preserve your skin, the better results you will see. “We want to help our clients achieve the best version of themselves,” says Ross, “because better skin leads to better self-esteem.” I could not agree more Adam, and I am now officially obsessed.

DIY Succulents

Trending: Home Sweet Succulents

By Grace Konrad

When it comes to interior design, succulents are having a major moment. The small, potted, thick-leaved desert plants have been popping up in store designs and apartments all over NYC – including my coffee table and book shelves. Many friends have asked me where is the best place to buy them, why are they so expensive already planted, and how can I use them effectively in my space? To answer some of these questions, I’ve put together a little DIY on how to create your own potted succulents (for much less) by utilizing the beloved NYC flower district.

If you’ve never been to the flower district on 28th street, you may be a little overwhelmed during your first visit. My advice is to arrive early and browse the stores before making any purchases. Some stores may have better plant selections while another may have the cuter planters. Once you have a lay of the land, it’s easier to embrace the energy and get excited about your planting project.

Planted succulents require 5 simple things in order to thrive:

  • A container with drainage holes
  • Potting mix
  • Light
  • Water (once or twice a week)
  • Gravel or topper of your choice

Simple, right? My first task of the day was to find pots I liked. After browsing a few shops I settled on two different containers, each for an individual plant. One was a more traditional terracotta style, and the other a cool square container in matte grey. Major bonus, each container was only 4$. Many of the stores in the flower district offer larger terarium style containers if that’s what you’re looking for, so you just have to be willing to browse a bit to find what you want.

The next step was to find plants I actually liked and wanted to have in my space. While multiple stores had succulents and boldly hued cacti, I ultimately chose two simple plants without major foliage. I wanted something that could easily be place on a narrow bookshelf or table without it being overwhelming, so I was focused on the overall size. The plants I ended up purchasing were from the first store I visited, but went back to after scoping out the competition. The plants were already in soil which saved me from purchasing an entire bag of it, and the owner gave me a great price – 7$ total for both plants. Last thing to purchase was gravel, which set me back about $12 for the bag.

In the end, the total cost for the project was about $23 for two succulents. This was a major steal considering that florists and garden shops in the city can charge anywhere from $15-100 for planted succulents and terrariums. Plus I had the satisfaction of designing the planters completely myself, which gave me the freedom to match back to my existing interior decor scheme.

Fall Home Updates: Because It’s Too Hot Fo...

Fall Home Updates: How To Transition Your Crib From Summer To Fall

(because it’s too damn hot to start wearing Fall clothes)

Fall 2016 Home Design Updates

It happens every year. August rolls around and our favorite stores are pushing Fall harder than I remember. At first, I’m pumped. My favorite shops are stocked to the brim with fresh patterns and textures. The ravaged Summer clearance sections have been shoved to the back right corner of the store and all that remains on them is a few sad, tropical button down shirts that look so sad you can’t imagine how you bought them in the first place.

The thought of some new, darker hued threads gets me all worked up (as does the thought of any new wardrobe purchases). Having worked in the fashion business for over 12 years, I’m aware of the tricks retailers use to get consumers to buy new clothes in August and to clear out the Spring/Summer goods. I should be immune to the ploys but somehow, I’m powerless. In under 5 minutes I have an armful of sweaters, jeans and new woven shirts and I find myself in the cue for the changing rooms. I begin peeling off my shorts & tee shirt (which let’s be honest…at this point, are drenched with city sweat from the walk to the store) and am determined to make my first fall purchase.  I finally get into the changing room and everything goes to shit. The fancy new jeans won’t even slide over my swollen and sweaty gams. The fresh, Fall plaid shirt is sticking to my belly. A bead of sweat drips down my face and onto the crewneck sweater I coveted not 5 minutes ago. What the hell am I doing in here?! It’s 101 degrees outside and it’s not cooling down anytime soon. I’m over it. I have to leave immediately. I kindly give everything back to the changing room attendant and I’m out the door. Having realized that it’s just too damn hot to be wearing Fall clothes, I’ve decided to shift my attention to my apartment. If anything is going to get an early dose of Fall, it sure as hell won’t be me (I mean I JUST got my Summer body like a week ago). If you find yourself in the same boat as me, rest assured… giving your apartment a mid-August upgrade will be easy on the wallet and will give you the perfect dose of Fall while keeping you cool, calm & collected. Check out my top 5 trends interior design for Pre-Fall 2016 and give your place a little TLC.

  • Marble Accents: The marble trend kicked off in 2015 and is not going anywhere anytime soon. Adding a touch of this luxe material to your crib is super easy…from marble coffee tables to desk objects. I’ve found a few pieces that actually have some killer shades of rose gold incorporated into the design..shop them, here:

  •  Statement Bathroom Mirrors: Often the bathroom gets overlooked when giving you place a mini makeover. Give your bathroom an easy fall upgrade by mixing up your mirror game. Look for new shapes like circular, uneven edges, rustic wood or color. If you are replacing a vanity that has storage, look for cool woven baskets to store all of your stuff.

  • Mixed Materials for Your Kitchen: I’ve always been a big fan of mixing materials in kitchen spaces and am so happy this trend is sticking in 2016. The clean, all white kitchen trend is slowly becoming more eclectic and personal. Think about layering in small Persian rugs, rustic wooden bowls, found objects & cool art.

  • Tech-Free Living Rooms: Our lives are being run by technology. There’s no turning back. In 2016 we’ve seen a trend towards hiding or eliminating tech from your living room space in an an overall push for serenity and quality family time. Try to eliminate as much tech from your living room as possible and if you just can’t give everything up, we’ve rounded up some of the best discrete technology and that will blend into your space seamlessly as well as some classic living room favorites.

CHEMEX: How To Brew The Best Tasting (& Mos...

CHEMEX: How To Brew The Best Tasting (& Most Insta-Worthy Coffee)

by Stephen Lloyd / @Stephen_Lloyd

Chemex Set-Up

I’m sure we all can agree that coffee is an necessity for every morning. As much as I love the convenience of going to a coffee shop in the morning… It’s essential to have a coffee maker at home for the long mornings when I don’t feel like getting out and about (and especially when I feel like taking a day to binge watch Netflix…Please no Stranger Things spoilers please!). My at home solution is Chemex, a rad home brewing method with its classic vintage style, thick filters, and potential for brewing large batches of good coffee. Did I mention it’s photogenic too? It’s a no brainer why I choose to use the Chemex when I’m at home. Sure, it might take a bit longer than a traditional coffee brewer but trust me, the manual brewing makes it worth while.  I’ve come up with a few simple steps for you guys to brew up your own batch of coffee at home with Chemex:

What You’ll Need:

  •  Chemex
  •  Pouring Kettle
  •  Gram scale
  •  Filters
  •  Coffee beans
  •  Coffee grinder (preferably burr grinder)
  • GET YOUR GEAR, BELOW:

What You’ll Be Making:

  • Strong – 50–60g of coffee // 600-700g of water // 4:00min brew
  • Light – 33g of coffee // 525g of water // 5:00min brew
  • 41g of coffee // 621g of water // 4:09min brew

Okay, Let’s Do This:

1)    Unfold the Chemex filter, making it into a cone, and place it on of the Chemex, making sure that the 3-ply side is facing the spout—this will allow air to escape during brewing process.

2)    Rinse and preheat the filter & Chemex with hot water. This will remove any papery flavors imparted by the filter. Once the filter is completely saturated with hot water, carefully dispose of the rinse water.

3)    Place the Chemex and well rinsed filter onto a scale. Tare the scale to zero.

4)    Weigh out the correct amount of coffee and grind it slightly coarser than average pour over (think the consistency of sand).

Ground Coffee In Chemex Filter

5)    Place ground coffee in the pre-rinsed filter. Gently tap the side of the Chemex to level the brew bed. Place the Chemex onto the scale and tare the scale to zero.

6)    Use the water to completely saturate the grounds and allow the coffee to bloom for about 0:30-0:45seconds. (if you put 41g of coffee grounds put approx. 41g of water for the bloom).

Pour-over coffee with Chemex

7)    After 0:30-0:45 seconds, continue adding water until the scale reads the correct weight for the batch size. Pour in a slow steady stream in counter clockwise circles, avoiding the sides of the Chemex and pouring in the middle. You may need to stop pouring momentarily to allow some of the water to drain through the filter before adding more water. This step should take between 1–2:30 minutes or until the timer reads 2:00–3:30.

8)    Let drip, remove filter & sip

 * The total brew time should last between 4–5minutes. *
